A Morning of Fishing for Latino Conservation Week

IWF recently co-hosted an event titled “A Morning of Fishing and Conservation” with staff from the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game at the wildlife area south of Nampa. Held Wednesday, September 16, the event was one of 19 different get-togethers held throughout the Treasure Valley as part of the fifth-annual Idaho Latino Conservation Week. 

The celebration is part of a larger, nationwide initiative of the Hispanic Access Foundation and was created to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources. The first Latino Conservation Week was held in 2014, with just nine events held across the country that year. 

This past week, there were more than 300+ such events held nationwide as part of the 2026 Latino Conservation Week. 

The Idaho Wildlife Federation’s Kyle Maki, Sporting Partnerships and Policy Manager, and Jason Kauffman, Community Outreach and Event Coordinator, both participated in the event. Approximately 20-25 members of the public attended the event and enjoyed a successful morning of fishing at the Lower Dam Recreation Area at the northern end of Lake Lowell. Idaho Department of Fish and Game volunteers and staff brought one of the agency’s “Take Me Fishing” trailers to the event to outfit anyone wishing to fish. 

Special thanks goes out to staff from the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, without which the event would not have been such a success.
