IWF is the oldest statewide conservation organization founded in 1936. The Federation ran the campaign to pass the 1938 Citizen's Initiative to establish the independent Commission of the Department of Fish and Game, to remove wildlife management from political jeapoardy. Since then, IWF has been at the forefront advocating for sound and scientific management of Idaho's wildlife and landscapes.
Our fingerprints can be found on every conservation victory in Idaho: the establishment of the Sawtooth NRA and Wilderness, Frank Church Wilderness, and Boulder White Cloud Wilderness. We kept the Middle Fork of the Salmon River undammed and successfully petitioned the listing of our salmon and steelhead as Endangered Species.
To this day we work fiercely to keep public lands in public hands, to provide for healthy habitat as well as public recreation for everyone, despite continued attacks from political idealogues. We bring the voice of Idahoans to decision makers to perpetuate our state's natural heritage and keep Idaho, well, Idaho!
